Who's Not Getting the Evo 4G?

So why don't they just dump me as a customer then (they've done it before) or at least force me to upgrade to a different plan? I'm not in contract any longer so there'd be nothing I could really do to stop them except leave...

Bad publicity. The last thing sprint needs is for people to start griping about customer service again when its finally started getting fairly good. People with low cost plans area also more likely to become and advocate and suggest sprint to others.

I'll be completely honest - I was gung ho to get the Evo 4G as soon as it came out. I was going to drive to whatever Sprint store had the Evo 4G on the release date and hoped to be one of the first people using it! I loved the phone, and couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

But then Sprint announced the pricing and the conditions, and all of a sudden my interest faded. I might very well be in the minority here, but I honestly don't think I'm going to get it anymore now. I currently pay around $50/month and get pretty much everything (SERO 1250 plan with unlimited text, data, tethering, sprint-to-sprint calls, N&W starting at 7 PM, free long distance and roaming, etc.), so for me to have to switch to an inferior plan and pay a whopping $30/month more seems outrageous and completely absurd!

That's not to say that I don't really want the Evo, but I just don't think I can justify giving up my current phone (Treo 800w WinMo 6.1) so that I can pay $199 and be committed to Sprint for another 2 years and over the term of that contract pay almost $2000 ($1,920 to be exact) vs. paying $50/month with no contract (and over the course of 2 years that's only $1,200 - a savings of $720!!). And that's not even including what would happen if I went over my 450 minute allotment or wanted to add the WiFi HotSpot feature.

Sprint should honestly reconsider their policy about forcing customers that purchase the Evo to switch plans. I'd probably switch if they forced me to pay the $10/month premium but allowed me to keep my plan, but forcing me into a contract, forcing me to still pay for the phone, and then forcing me to switch to an inferior, more expensive plan that will cost me a lot more money over the course of 2 years while getting a lot less is just too many negatives for me to switch to the Evo. Maybe Sprint will change their minds down the road, but this is one customer that Sprint has just turned off!

Anyone else?

#1) You're the only one

#2) Was this the first smartphone you've ever been interested in on Sprint? Because I figure it has to be if you thought there was a chance in hell that your sero plan would still work. Seems to speak volumes about you that you thought it might work

#3) Get a corporate discount

#4) where in the world do you get $2000?

Listen, if you're not not going to use more than 450 anytime minutes to LANDLINES between the hours of 7am - 7pm when most people should be working then what do you care if it's technically 'less'?

If you're not using it, you're not using it.

#5) You're worried about being 'tied down to a contract'?

Really? What good is not being in a contract going to do for you right now? Anywhere you go is going to be a ton more expensive than your current plan so I see no advantage for worrying about getting into a 2 yr contract with sprint again.

#6) Use PDA net to tether, and don't compare your tethering to the tethering you'd get with the mobile hotspot feature. Apples and oranges.

Man...you cheap people kill me.

Hmm...please tell me more about the $10/24 month discount and $70 loyalty renewal credit!!

And thanks for understanding :)

The $10 monthly credit is easy to get if you are on an old sero plan and want to switch to a regular ED 450 plan $69.99 will be $59.99. Just contact sprint rententions and tell them you heard there was a $10 recuring credit, they had no problem giving me the discount. The credit pays for the $10 evo fee if you decide to get the phone. They may not do the one time $70 renewal credit because some are saying you can't have it and the $150 phone upgrade credit.

Marc, I know the pricing (the extra 10 bucks per Evo) is an issue for me. I'm not whining or complaining, just stating that with that charge for multiple Evos, I am reconsidering my plan to switch to Sprint from Verizon. It's barely going to be a savings after all! I think Sprint is making a mistake--this seemed like a BIG opportunity for them to get ship-jumpers from other carriers. Wonder if this charge will backfire on them.

Exactly - I definitely agree that Sprint is making a mistake!

Good point - I'm still happy with Sprint, and even if I stick with my SERO plan and Treo 800w, I'll be happier than paying double on Verizon or elsewhere. I just wish Sprint would let me keep my plan and move over to the Evo - oh well...

I don't get it - why are there always people on these forums that feel the need to be hostile and make everything personal. I won't even bother responding any further to this person's post, even though they definitely have some stuff wrong (I think)...

Good to know - thanks for the info - definitely gives me something to consider...

Its not about being cheap. I wouldn't have a problem with the $10 charge if I were receiving the services it is meant to cover. We can't all live in 4g markets, but we all get to pay for it.

Not only that, but how does forumsid987 even know what my financial situation is? Maybe I can afford $50/month (at a cost of $1200/24 months) but not $80/month with the possible overages (at a cost of at least $1920/24 months + possible overages + the cost of the phone). I don't consider it to be cheap to try and save some money when I'm currently paying $50 and Sprint wants me to pay $80 for less...

Plus, once again, forumsid987 could have made his points in a much more polite and respectful manner...

You caught a good wave, hung on for quite a while. Eventually that wave must end and you need to look for the next big one.

Be that wave be a plan or a phone. Eventually it must end.

Sprint held their end of the bargain for the SERO plans (2 year commitment), the users of them just are expecting far too much at this point. I feel for you, but there comes a point where it cannot be held against sprint as a fault.

1. Your right it does suck.
2. It is irrational to pay more even if you can afford it. Do you think Sprint would like to pay more in wages just because they can afford it?
3. The only way to possibly change the things is to have a big enough outcry of people on your existing plan.
4. Individually people will have to weigh the cost vs the value that the EVO will bring to their lives. But who has the time for that? :p

Eh, generally, I'm not a huge fan of SERO users. Stereotypically, they whine when their bill goes above the ridiculous price they pay(because they want a new phone) and expect Sprint to bend head over heels for them, and then typically leave Sprint, paying more money to some other carrier as a way of spiting Sprint even though it would've been cheaper for them to stay in the first place, especially if they went around hunting for corporate discounts for places they work(I get 27% off from my employer, Wells Fargo and 20% from my school, UC Davis for example)

/rant

But, I do feel your pain on some of the EVO fees though. The Mobile Hotspot one not so much since I pay 60/month right now for an aircard. The 10 bucks is lame, but Sprint charges so little for what they give out that I can't really complain. I'm still paying less than what I was with AT&T. I suppose its all perspective though. I had AT&T, think Sprint+EVO is a vast improvement on price. You have SERO, and think anything over 50 is silly expensive. But honestly, check out EPRP, and some corporate discounts. You could prolly wing a 27% even if you dont work for the company.

Considering less than 30 cities have 4G, it's a complete frickin rip-off that EVERYONE has to pay the $10.
It would make more sense to make it a pay for use fee, like the WIFI router capability. I'm still going to buy the phone, but I completely disagree with the extra $10. Saying I will use the phone more because it is faster with a bigger screen is ridiculious. The only thing I use my phone for right now as far as data goes is streaming music, and I don't need a bigger screen or faster processer for that.

Well put, imagine I said that.

Also, the $10 includes UNLIMITED 3G usage.

com'on. with all respect, BE A MAN, and stop whining like some girly girl. its your choice to switch or not, make your decision. point is if you want to something awesome but cheap, you are gonna disappointed at the most of time, not just phone choices. Period.

@mbressman. I don't think you can make your decision now. When the phone comes out go to a Sprint store and see for yourself if the phone is actually worth the premium. I think and would hope that you would say yes, but maybe not.

Maybe the $10 will mean they employees might not have to go another whole year without raises.

Sadly, I'll be staying with my Hero, unless I win the one on offer from here. Plus, there is no 4g coverage in my area, Indianapolis. :(

"Hey, there's a dead dog right there.. let's kick that mo-fo again!!"

Enuf with the $10 EVO gripes.. If you like your Treo + current plan, then stay on it. Sprint isn't forcing you off your phone. Sooner or later you're going to have to upgrade that phone - and when you do, you'll have to pay more. If the EVO 4G isn't the phone that justifies moving up in the phone world - I don't know what will

I'm all about saving money, but at one point everyone needs to treat themselves to something that they enjoy. To be honest, pay that extra $30 a month would be well worth it to me.

I really don't do much for myself, as in big purchases, but once a year I always look forward to the next great phone. So I'll just splurge and buy a new phone once a year. Although, I already pay $80 a month so I'm already paying a decent amount a month.

Ya the $10 Evo tax is a little crazy for me considering I live in a non 4G area (Detroit), but Sprint has to make their money some way.

It all depends if you really want or have a need for the phone. Also that extra $30 a month you'll be paying will be worth it. There are dozens of discounts you can get through Sprint. I think having a credit union account gets you 15% off. That right there knocks off $12.

Also if you don't buy one maybe this phone won't outsell the next iPhone:(

I hear you brother, I loved my SERO plan, rode it for four years, first with a Treo 650 and then with the 800w. But the Evo has finally lured me off. It was a good run with SERO, sweet deal but all good things must end eventually. There's never been a better time to cut the SERO cord.

My 800w got the job done for what it was (albeit with a lot of hacks/addons, random freezes and crappy battery life), but we're in the iPhone era now and I am so ready to move on.

If you have any chance of setting up a family plan with some buddies, that can ease the pain, of course. I went with the EPRP 1600, easy switch over the phone to merge me and two other SERO holders.

Ok - so I just got off the phone with Sprint and found out that there were a few things I hadn't counted on. First, 7PM N&W will still come with the everything data plan. Second, it includes unlimited mobile-to-mobile to any mobile phone, while I think my SERO Plan only included mobile-to-mobile to other Sprint mobile numbers. I'm more on the fence now than I was before...hmm...what should I do?

I also don't think I qualify for any discounts - I work for myself so no employer discounts. Anyone know if there is a master list of all discounts available somewhere?

Thanks.

I can't answer your question, but I can volunteer this. My wife just switched a couple of months ago from a 900 minute NO TEXT NO DATA N/W at 7, free Sprint to Sprint plan, where she was almost always over her minutes, to the ED plan with 450 minutes, free mobile to mobile, etc. She hasn't gone over her minutes at all since the switch; and has text, data, nav, etc. as well now.

My point is, you might be surprised how many of your calls are cell to cell...
