Who's switching to Samsung Galaxy S2? (Epic 4G Touch)

My Epic is eligible for upgrade on 11/1. I am definitely ditching it. The keyboard has been an unusable dud. My fingers smash multiple keys and I'm worse on it than either the Swype or Android keyboard. And the "Oreo cookie" effect is maddening and just makes the whole thing feel cheap. I'm done with keyboards forever.

I played with both the Epic Touch and Photon side-by-side at an event. Other than the GSM radio, the Photon is a complete loser next to the Epic Touch. I ran Quadrant and Neocore on both. The Sammy had a higher Neocore score and the Photon had the higher Quadrant score. But the Epic's screen just blows the Photon away. I've talked to people who have bought the Photon, and they all complain that it is absolutely terrible at locking on to a 4G signal and in switching between 3G and 4G. Side-by-side with an EVO, I've seen the Photon struggle to connect to 4G and download Netflix videos while the EVO had no trouble. I think the Samsung will be the way to go when it comes out.

My only beef has been that Samsung DOES NOT update its phones. All their money and resouces go to new phones. They have zero support for existing customers. If you aren't absolutely blown away with the phone when you first buy it, and if there are any bugs whatsoever, RETURN IT because you will never see an update or bug fix in that phone's life. I have a Transform and an Epic as developer phones and neither has ever seen an update.

I'd switch if I can convince my wife how awesome the Epic is... so she can have mine:)

Until Samsung can prove to me they can support their phones I would have a really hard time buying one again (we are only on like the 15th version of Gingerbread leaks and I don't think they ever even updated froyo to work right as I always had wifi problems). I do really like my Epic though overall and this new phone has me as excited as I was when mine was first announced but if I go Samsung again it's probably got to be a Nexus. Hoping we get the Prime on Sprint.

I think its the terrible GB leaks that will influence many to dump their Epics and get the new model. EH17 has been a nightmare. They need to get it together fast.

While Samsung definitely has dropped the ball updating the Epic, I feel as though the SGS2 line is supposed to be their flagship line, and that since all the variants (across all carriers) are really similar, they should all receive updates, and more of them? I can't see them disappointing that many people, especially when the phone is already a wild success overseas

I really want to upgrade to the Epic 4G Touch (galaxy S2), but I got my epic back in Sept 2010 for $250.00 and I dont want to pay full price for the phone. Hopefully I can find a nice deal on ebay or craigslist. I figure the full price for an epic touch will be around $550+.

If all else fails, I will wait till next year for the Galaxy S3.

Or you could do what I did a couple of years ago and reset the contract to avoid having to pay the full price. Upside it that if you have Premier Gold, it wouldn't set you back in a major way.

"Updates" always sound good on all the electornics. However, considering the econimic situation and the great performance of the phone at this time I don't think it's feasible to do it. Also, the initial "an arm & a leg" charge that they impose on us is not so attractive at this time. :)

Beautiful phone but what happen to the keyboard!!!! :'( I just hope Samsung release another version !! Right now I'm still satisfied with the current Epic and I bought mines on the launch date, So I can wait even if it has to be another year for next best thing !!!! :-[

Reset the contract? Didnt know that you could do that. I dont ever plan on switching carriers. I am a heavy data user since I rooted my phone and use the epic's ability to become a hotspot. So the unlimited data for smartphones really helps. Plus, I dont want to pay the extra $30 a month for that feature.

I really want the Epic touch, I just wish that the 4g radio would be both LTE and WiMax. But of course by the time Sprint switches to LTE the Galaxy S3 will probably be out.

Just thought I'd ask since its been formally announced now. Other than the lack of a keyboard, it looks awesome to me! :D

Can't wait till December (upgrade time) :D

I'm actually glad it doesn't have the keyboard. I never use mine, and even though I LOVE my Epic, I want something faster, lighter, and thinner.

I'm going to hang onto my Epic. I've been through too many phones already...it's time to settle down, stick out the contract, & wait to see how LTE pans out.

See my post in other thread. It should really be posted here but it kind of plays both threads...

Yeah I did it with my Bulls**t Blackberry Pearl 8130, that phone was supposed to be truly amazing, but it came out being full of $%#@. It wasn't going to hurt me in anyway to reset my contract at the time.

my epic does everything I want it to do better than my last phone. I don't particularly care if my phone gets upgraded as long as it's already doing what I expect it to and so far it has.

I use my phone for texting, im, email and calling. It does all of that without a hiccup. Plus it has gps, places, yellow book, internet and tons of apps that I now use.

It all works wonderfully on my epic. I just don't care that all I have gotten is one update.

So if I decide on getting a new phone such as the galaxy 2 touch, the regularity of updates is not a consideration and definitely not a killing point. I have discovered that I no longer want a physical keyboard as I found that I never use it. But would like a thinner sleeker phone. That is really the only reason I would switch from the epic.

Fully agree with you Keith. If the phone is working as you want then that is excellent. Unfortunately though most users also want that upgrade to the next latest and greatest software/OS version. They buy the phone expecting that and want it bottom line so I do agree with everyone there... I'm not singling anyone out here so don't take this personally but other devices like HTC, Moto, etc. they all get their updates to newer software and it usually works out very well so Sammy customers are simply expecting to be treated the same as customers on other devices.

Now with this new SGSii everyone is going to be expecting ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) as their next stepping stone in updates. Trust me, people will be expecting it. Problem is given Sammys reputation its hard to justify going down the same road as the Epic 4g, Samsung Moment and other Samsung products.

I sure hope Sammy has done a good job with the SGSii software out of the box because I personally believe that will be the best chance for solid software on the device because the update history so far just hasn't panned out.

So, without a keyboard how does one get into download mode?

I'm not saying it would, but I'm just speculating. Maybe: Power+Volume Down=Recovery and Power+Volume Up=Download mode. Just my guess as it seems like in most phones, some sort of combo with the volume down button and power button (sometimes another button as well) are used to go into recovery mode.
