Why all of the M9 hate? I don't get it...

For M8 users like me the only difference we can really find between the M8 and M9 is the camera, and if this camera tends to be as bad as we saw in previews, there are no way to make us pay 400$ to swap from M8 to M9, specially that Sense 7 is running well on M8 now thanks to ported roms.
For people who are bored from M8 it will be better to take a S6,note 4 or even wait for Z4

It depends. I think HTC is targeting M7 users and doesn't really expect M8 users to get the M9. Many will certainly do get the M9. I am one of them and I have already preordered. My reasons?
- I want to have the latest model
- I expect an even faster device
- I hope that the camera will be better
- I have read that the screen has better saturation than on the M8
- I prefer to have 32GB instead of 16. The M8 in Europe was sold only with 16GB.
- The ability to record 4K videos is nice to have

I think I have this in the bag. On paper, the Toshiba sensor is superior to the outgoing UltraPixel sensor in nearly every facet except for the pixel size. The UltraPixel camera also stands little chance of producing better results for video recording (since they've included EIS).

Also, this is just a guess, but I wonder if the reduction in battery capacity in conjunction with the use of a QHD display is the cause of the battery test results to appear less than optimal for the S6. Regardless, this is going to be FUN!!! Best of luck because you're going to need it..hahaha

The Verge have said the camera is worse than the M8 and battery life is the same

Off to a bad start

Well now I must concede defeat in my wager. I picked 5 sites for the battery test (vs the M8), gsmarena, phonearena, pocketnow, techradar, and slashgear. Since 3 of the 5 have already concluded that the battery has indeed worsened from the prior iteration, this is a done deal and I have lost.

gsmarena.com
M9
62h (endurance) 3g Talk (20:44h) Web Browsing (7:31h) Video (8:21h)

M8
77h (endurance) 3g Talk (14:15h) Web Browsing (12:29h) video (10:11h)

phonearena.com
HTC One (M8) 7h 12 min (Good)
HTC One M9 6h 25 min (Average)

techradar.com

Running TechRadar's standard battery test on the One M9, where we looped a 90 min full HD video at maximum brightness
showed that the new HTC phone was one of the worst performers of recent times, with 31% of the battery disappearing.

I also ran the same test on the newly-Lollipopped HTC One M8 and HTC One M7, and they managed 24% and 30% respectively -
and the phone from 2013 had barely enough battery to make it through the day too. This shows that for some reason HTC has
managed to go backwards in battery life, even with the larger capacity and theoretically more efficient processor.

With that said, congrats to Alex_NJ for the win and for playing along to begin with. Now you get the honor of defacing (or vandalizing) my avatar. I swear if you make me change it to a Redskins logo, I will hunt you down and smear brownies under the door handles of your car.

Aside from losing my bet, I also get to enjoy a nice healthy portion of crow. I'm sure I've debated quite a bit about some of the M9's flaws and that certain aspects of it weren't as bad as some of the beta reviews had labeled it. In all it looks like it took a serious step back with the battery life (which I swore would have been better). The camera was improved, except it sacrificed low-light prowess for details (so I think they made one problem worse while improving another). So the biggest reason why I feel like I should be eating crow is because I never thought I'd say this about an HTC Phone, given their past attempts at striving for excellence. However, that battery life is so ****ed that it's ridiculous. A more efficient processor that can handle that display resolution with ease. Unless they borked up the power consumption of the on board radios, I don't get it. I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANYONE BLAMING THE 810 for the battery performance. If Sony's claims about the endurance of the Z4 tablet hold true, then HTC has some serious explaining to do as to why they couldn't optimize the battery life on the M9. The design, audio, and camera (for the most part) of the M9 I have no problems with and I'm glad they made improvements where they did. That battery performance that I've been seeing so far is inexcusable on so many levels and that's my biggest source of frustration with the M9. So for now, with my HTC One Max, would I be inclined to upgrade to the M9? As of the time of this writing, no. And that's not to say the M9 is a bad device, but I can't see myself having to compromise that much on the battery life in exchange for a better camera, UI, audio, and raw performance. That's just my opinion of course.

Habiib,

I hear what you are saying. My issue is I am coming from an M7 so technically I should be happy with the M9 because it has improved in every way including battery life. However, I feel a bit of a letdown that HTC couldn't deliver this year relative to my other options. I feel like I am just settling. The only other phone I am considering is the Z4 and possibly the S6. At least Samsung took all their criticisms to heart, while HTC seems to have meandered all over the place but ended up the same spot they started.

The brand loyalty stuff is hilarious. And why can't think community who prefers one brand talk about another brand? Let's not become windows phone central forums please! Ill speak of WP and you're thrown into the pit for feasting....coming from there to hear shows this community is more open minded to critizism, let's keep it that way even between OEM 'battles'.

I don't think anyone thinks the M9 will be bad, but more so HTC raised the standards very high and people just expected more. Obviously of youre an HTC One fan you'll be more than happy, most reviews say an upgrade from the M7 is a good jump forward. With that said, the phones has areas people expected more improvement... That's all. Its not hate but if the forums didn't have techie fans speaking their mind, then what's the purpose of opinionated forums? HTC fans shouldn't take the M9 negativity as a slap to the face, but a recognizing that the while Android community respects what they've done and want them to push further rather than play it safer. That's all.

This is one of the most upsetting competitions I've ever won.

I really thought it would be close and come down to the wire, and maybe we had some argument over battery stats on because it is down to the user, or maybe the camera was better so long as the user knew how to take good photos...

But it wasn't even close, and now I have to go decide which phone to buy, I'm genuinely considering the M8

Anyway, here is your new avatar... enjoy :)

The bigger question for me; why would anyone waste a second of their life worrying whether or not a complete stranger on the internet approves of the inanimate tool that I happen to like.......
Do you twitch on the way to work when you notice not everyone bought the same car as you?

Because humans need validation. We wouldn't have fortune 500 companies without it.

No but if a bunch of negative reviews came out about a car I was considering buying, I would certainly look into them and think twice about buying it.

Its human nature to get disappointed in something they are looking forward to buying. It can be anything, not just a phone. I know you prefer some brands over others, and I'm sure it would hit you some kind of way if you found out a brand you trusted has failed to live up to its standards

This sentence explains why there's so much angst over this phone: high expectations.

HTC seemed to figure out what made a great phone when they introduced the original One series. Gone were the mediocre build and buggy phones, and instead they brought well built and thoughtfully designed phone hardware and software. And they made good strides towards innovation.

Some folks felt that the Ultrapixel camera was a mistake, but I actually thought it was a great idea and would have loved to see them bring out a better version of it. (most people don't need more than 8 megapixels in a phone)

But now, they have thrown innovation to the wayside and brought out a phone that was obviously made by the bean counters, trying to save costs by not spending money on cutting edge research (or in the case of the display, poor and cheap materials).

This was going to be my next phone, but no way I can give them my money now.
