Using to sync gmail with S5

I've had to manually refresh gmail for a day now.

However, I am noticing if I toggle the sync on and off and then change the sync from 30 days to 3 days it starts to work temporarily.

Any idea on what could be causing this issue? Or suggestions I could try?

Please help. Thanks.

Re: Using to sync gmail with S5

Do you mean minutes or days? I didn't know you push the sync out that far, but I also do not use the stock app. However if you actually mean days that could be an issue if it is only wanting to update that infrequently. Even if you mean minutes by turning off and then on the sync you are actually reseting the counter which would account for the seeming to work after the toggle.

I would set my sync to as low as it will go and restart the device. Then send myself some test emails to see if they are appearing at the correct rate. If they are not then you may have had an update that got glitchy with the install and I would uninstall the GMail update then install the update again under ideal conditions, strong WiFi area, or 4G network area. Then power down the device after the update and repeat the testing. If you are still having the issue after all of that I would just try another app to see if it is the app or the device. If the new app updates regularly without any issue then it's most likely the GMail app and I might dig around in the app settings or try to uninstall and install it again like before. If even the new app isn't working correctly I might start considering a Factory Reset. I know it's extreme but having a device that isn't working correctly would be more of a pain than having to set up the device one more time. IMO.

Re: Using to sync gmail with S5

A factory reset sounds awful so I am going to wait a day before trying. I have another device (Samsung Tablet) using the same gmail account and it works fine.

In my sync settings, I don't have "push" or "minutes". I can only turn "on" sync and then select number of days. That is all.

Am I missing something? Is there a way within gmail to increase the frequency of syncing? If so, I've checked and don't see that.

Re: Using to sync gmail with S5

I did the factory reset and it was definitely worth it! It even installed my apps back automatically.

Was that the Verizon backup? Or something else?

I can't figure out how the S5 knew which apps I had installed prior to the reset and then automatically reinstalled?

Any idea?

That's Google. If you allow Google backup to run, anytime you sign into a new device as the owner, or do a factory reset (which requires you to sign in as the owner) your Play Store account installs the apps from your installed list. This happened when I bought my M7, upgrading from the Rezound. Now if it would just save your sign-ins and game saves it would be perfect.

Added note for those who may find this thread later;

As for your account working on another device I never believed it to be the account. And even though both devices have a GMail app, in this case, the app will not be the same necessarily from one device to another. Apps usually have to be tweaked a little from say tablets to phones, and from 4.4" screens with physical buttons to 5.1" screens with virtual buttons. The app is essentially the same but there are often minor differences, to say that it could still be the app even though it is working on one device and not on another because they are different versions of the same core app.

I realize that you've solved your issue, some apps have "refresh rates" or "sync intervals". I think the Facebook app is one that does and I believe my Maildroid app is another. So for those concerned about the amount of data they use these settings help them use less, because each request sent to check for new and each response, positive or negative, uses a small amount of data. By setting the refresh rate to a few less times each day one can reduce this load. Although I've still never heard of an app with a "days" refresh rate, seems excessive. Some apps will also have refresh over WiFi only options, like G+ Backup, which only transmits data when a WiFi connection is present. I don't know every app, in fact I know very little about most of the stock apps at all, because I've replaced them with other apps that offer me more or that I like better. So I was just guessing based on options I've found in other apps that your app may also have these options. In older versions of Android you could also set a refresh rate for some items in the Sync menu of the OS. I think that has died out though.

The stock GMail app does not let you set a sync frequency for Google accounts. The period you're referring to is the number of days of email to store locally on your mobile device. If you need to set a sync frequency, which many people do now because the Lollipop update seems to have broken push notifications, Google advises (on their product forums) that you should use a third party app. Force Gmail Sync is highly rated on Google play (or checkout forcegmailsync.com) and has solved all the sync problems I was having after installing an OTA Lollipop update. It lets you select an interval as short as 1 minute or as long as 6 hours so you can control how often the stock GMail app pulls down new mail

A real bummer so many people got problems with the syncing since last updates of Android.

It is even more weird that from time to time my gmail got pushed almost instantly for like a day, and works flawless. After some fooling around with apps and settings that should have nothing to do with Gmail or so it won't get pushed at all anymore. Also since last update it seems I have to clear the cache a lot more to keep my phone running smooth. Apps that works great for months suddenly gets corrupt.

I wish I never installed the last update of my phone for sure.

Like my wife told yesterday... Never heard this kind of ... with Iphone. Android and google aren't pushing mails, but people to the other side it seems. Not to mention other crap like not made it possible to change that ugly colours in about every standard app they deliver.

It's insane I have to buy an app for a problem that never occured to me before my last android-update. And even more insane how long this takes to fix. A lof of S6 users also seems to have the same problem.

And a factory reset (or even multiple) together with a clean cache memory won't solve it neither.
