Why am I not able to access to my work emails?

Nexus 4 - ZERO access to my work emails

I have a Nexus 4 and used to have separate accounts for gmail & exchange. After the android upgrade the o/s asked if I wanted to join my exchange account with gmail - which I don't. Now I have ZERO access to my work emails and I need them urgently... Why has Google painted all it's customers with one brush!! It's insulting!! Please can someone help ASAP?
