Why am I unable play/view audio files and images after performing a factory reset of my phone?

[Android Central Question]

I'm using Xperia m4 aqua, recently I did a factory reset of this phone and it turns out that I'm unable to play any audio files and some videos and view images which are in external storage SD card.
The response I'm getting is ' cannot play ' or an ' error message '
Please help with any tips or suggestions.

Were the files created with an app that is now gone?
