Why am I unable to send email from my Samsung Galaxy 5?

I am unable to send email from my Samsung Galaxy 5

I am getting message from Google (my account is Gmail) saying I'm not signed in. But my phone has been signed on since I set my gmail account up. This has only been happening for a week.

Welcome to Android Central! Are you using the stock Email app, or the Gmail app?
