Why are my frequent contacts disappearing?

I have verison on a Samsung 7. This has happened twice in four weeks and requires reentering the contacts. The Verison Tech coach said to go to Google settings and restore contacts which just synced all my devices eliminating the contacts from my desk top and tablet as well as my phone

Moved to S7 as being perhaps more likely than Note 7.
