Why are new messages coming through in a new conversation?

As of this morning, when someone text me it comes through as a new, separate conversation instead of showing in the last conversation (I don't delete conversations so I can reference back when needed for work). Now I have two separate conversations for many people. Why is this happening and how so I change it back?
