Why aren't I getting Gmail Notifications?

No Gmail Notifications

I've had my phone for a couple of days, and I noticed I don't get notifications for Gmail. I do get a beep, but I don't get anything visual. (What if I didn't hear the beep?) There used to be a number on the Gmail icon, showing how many messages I had. I've been reading the forums all morning, and I've tried every fix anyone has suggested, short of doing a factory reset. Still nothing. I know lots of people have/had this problem, and I'm hoping someone found a fix that actually works. TIA!

Open your Gmail app then in the upper left corner three small horizontal bars (the hamburger) tap on that. then scroll down to the bottom and tap on settings. Next tap on the account name whos settings you want to change. Now scroll down to notification settings and check your settings, send notification when email arrives should have a check mark. Set your notification tone as desired, and Vibrate as desired as well.

Long press the home screen and select widgets. See if there is a Gmail widget that displays the notification count. If one is not available, then you can download a widget from the Play Store that will place a Gmail icon on the home screen and provide a number count as to how many unread emails you have.

That's exactly what I did a couple of hours ago.
