Why aren't my SMS notifications working after 5.1.1 upgrade on my Sony Xperia Z3?

SMS Notifications not working after 5.1.1 Upgrade on Sony Xperia Z3

I use Messenger+ as my default SMS app. Two days ago, the 5.1.1 upgrade (first Lollipop upgrade to my phone) was pushed to my Sony Xperia Z3. Now, the SMS notification does not stay in my top bar. It appears momentarily then disappears. The message count on my home screen also doesn't increment. It's a'most as if the message is being instantly marked as read.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? I downloaded Google Messenger but that doesn't seem to be functioning correctly either.

Welcome to Android Central! Are you saying the notification icon disappears from the status bar, or are you talking about the banner notification that appears temporarily on the top of the screen?

Not sure if this will work, but try wiping the cache partition, which won't erase any personal data: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-11663

It's the envelop that appears in the top right hand corner indicating I have a new message. Also, when I used to open the app, the new messages were in bold. Now they appear as if they've already been read. Can there be some process which is accidentally marking all new messages as read? That would explain why the new message icon disappears.

Clearing the cache hasn't helped the issue.

You don't have a smartwatch, do you? That would be a potential reason why the phone would think the messages have been read.

I'm going insane with this problem. No notifications are causing me to miss a ton of messages! Someone help!!!

Are you sure you're seeing an envelope? The envelope icon is for email. The text message icon is a smiling message.
