Why cant certain apps import images?

[Android Central Question]

I wanted to use an app called Background Eraser, but when i press load image and it goes into the default file explorer -- any image that i pick just makes the phone buzz and return to the main page of the background eraser app. This particular problem also occured in meme generator by zombodroid. From what i can tell if an app has to import an image from another app (default file explorer, fx file manager, etc) then this problem always occurs. But if an app can import/load the image on its own (e.g. VSCO) then everything goes as planned. Any ideas why this is happening? Im using a Xiaomi 10T Pro with latest updates

Welcome to Android Central! Go to Settings>Apps, then select the app, then Permissions. Make sure it has permission to access files and/or storage.

Are the photos saved as jpeg?

Many apps aren't designed to handle RAW files and many new phones can save images as HEIF files which may not be recognized by apps.
