Why can't we get top specs in a normal Size???

Yeah I also have a GNEX and don't have a problem with my camera. Could it be better? Yes, but it actually takes some nice pics. I've taken pics that have impressed my brother who has a 4s and is highly critical of Android. There are way better cameras out there but for a phone it works fine. I dont think there will ever be a perfect device. The One S is a good device and should definitely be considered. Also for those saying you get less for what you pay when you buy a smaller phone you also have to think about the fact that it costs more to make too.

Idk... Makes sense but... How much does it cost to make an iphone verse any one of the droids out there? I mean, they are sort of the same price... Iphone5 starts at $199 on contract. Does it really cost more to make the device smaller??

Actually I think the cost is in the time to design and test it, only marginally on parts. With that in mind, Apple really has only designed a couple of different phones from a physical layout standpoint. i.e. the iPhone 1 / 3, and the iPhone 4 and later - with regular updates along the way.

IMO, Android makers should take a similar strategy. Pick a couple of form factors and specialize, invest in it, evolve it, and be the best at that segment.

Okay but the components are pretty much the same size or maybe smaller for new devices, so why would the sgs3 mini cost less than the regular sgs3?

They all have the capability. I think going larger is just OEMs chasing their tails. An example if this, and apple is included in this... is OEMs constantly looking to go thinner. It has been well established now that people do not care so much for super thin. People clearly would give up light and thin for increased battery life. So you finally see a bit of a shift back from this with the razr maxx hd, the new nexus 4, and others who are now raising the bar by adding batteries over 2000mah and making the next evolution to their products a bit heavier or not any thinner than the previous.

What it comes down to is that OEMs aren't the gods of all ideas and thought. They clearly make mistakes and make poor decisions despite their years of experience in the business. Just look at RIM today, the king of missteps, but also the godfather to the smartphone. If they paid me at least half what they pay their top exects, i could of told them 3 years ago that they were on the wrong track!

The iPhones have continuously gotten battery life comparable to Andoid devices (or better, factorably so in many cases) with much smaller batteries. The Galaxy S had a 1500 mAh battery. The iPhone 5 still has a battery smaller than that, but on LTE it still has battery life compared to most Android devices except Razr Maxx type devices. The only time another phoen can really beat it is by using power management features, which the iPhone doesn't even have options for in the OS...

Also, the Galaxy Nexus camera is pretty bad compared to Galaxy S2, Vivid/Rezound/Amaze/MT4G, Titan 2, iPhone 4S/5, One Series, GS3, Xperia S/ion devices. Even the Razr M has a better camera, and Motorola was never known to have great cameras in their phones. No one cares how much MP it has. The MP has nothing to do with the image quality the camera module produces except when you try to cram too many pixels in a small sensor - this is only a 5MP sensor. The fact that it's only 5MP in a phone released that late (well after the world had moved on to 8MP modules in high end smartphones) and still performs decently *at best* is even more embarassing.

Nokia had 3MP cameras released half a decade ago that can stomp all over the Galaxy Nexus, in features phones that didn't have anything near the fancy camera software these devices have. The stock Android camera app being so bad doesn't help it, either. HTC, Samsung, and Sony camera software do help push out better images.

The GPU in the Galaxy Nexus is IIRC the same GPU that was in the Hummingbird that Samsung put in the Original Galaxy S devices, no?

That's sort of like asking why the Playstation 2 costs less than the Playstation 3 back when the PS2 was in a smaller housing.

If they made the mini with SGS3 specs it would not cost less.

Right but you are saying that it is because of size that things cost more. Maybe I misunderstood your post. It is the quality of the components that changes the price not how small the case is. The engineering isn't any more difficult on the S3 mini than it is on the iPhone 5 or sgs3 so how is this impacting price?

The gs 3 mini cost less because of the reduced specs, therefore, less premium components that add to cost, like camera sensor, screen res, etc...

Shady28 said the parts were insignificant in cost and the cost was in testing and what not. You agree or disagree?

Well my point was just that either size impacts cost or the quality of the components do. Due to the fact that we have lots of smaller devices that are lower cost then it would appear smaller doesn't mean more expensive. And testing is done by all manufacturers and carriers, so I'm not sure why an Apple phone somehow costs so much more. The case is nice and all but the logic escapes me.

Better and newer parts cost more. Period.

Parts at non discounted pricing for an iPhone in total was like $139 so parts I'm guessing pretty insignificant I'll Google later to see if I can find where I saw it

Edit: between $150 and $200 seems to be the average

Cnet not my favorite but it's a start

I think I'd argue that 4.5 is normal now.

$200 is a fair bit considering the N7 is selling for that. But I would assume assembly is a huge cost too. Regardless Apple is making money.

Apple is making massive returns don't look at subsidized pricing as that's what we pay up front.

I can only assume that android top tier cost as much if not more to build.

Factor in marketing assembly testing designing and I can understand why they cost so much to try and make a profit

I agree. I is pretty mind boggling when you see the amount of detail that goes into these things. Then we also want them to be shock and drop resistant.

Or in Japan water resistant is popular lol. Again I have no issues with manufacturing a smaller high end phone my quarrel is with people feeling this should be done at the drop of a hat and thinking that it won't hurt these companies in some way if they make x amount and it doesn't sell. They think this phone is in high demand in the ANDROID world when obviously it's not a giant market where these oem's see piles and piles of cash if it was trust me they would be on it like a fat kid on a cupcake filled with bacon :D

I don't think they should make anything at the dime of a hat. I do however think that looking at hardware from an Apple perspective can potentially be a real hit in the Android community. With the popularity of Apple hardware and Google software, i dream of a device that is the size and quality of iphone, in a jell bean platform with top end specs that rival the cream of the crop. It just makes sense....
