I"m not understanding the logic of how verizon makes contract user get tiered pricing when prepaid user get unlimited data for $30.

I'm guessing you are on prepaid since it's a better deal?

Is that still the case? I found some old article stating that pricing, but, nothing recent. Where did you read that? Do you have a link?

Yes, VZW is still offering unlimited data for $30 if you go pre-paid. Scroll to the near bottom of the page below.

Plans - Verizon Wireless

Verizon can still afford to offer unlimited data, despite what they and other carriers will tell you. They'll want to offer it to at least some of their customers still. They know that most customers want to get a phone at a discounted price and stay on contract with them. They dislike having prepaid customers obviously and need to throw them a bone, albeit a very juicy bone.

Thanks for posting the link. Surprise my search didn't find that.

Yea, of course they can afford it. I'm sure low usage customers offset the higher usage ones. But, why do they need to throw a bone to their prepaid customers?

For one thing, prepaid customers will pay full retail price for a smartphone which can be $500+, getting no contractual discount. Also, prepaid customers get slightly less coverage than postpaid customers. I believe they cannot roam in remote parts of the U.S where VZW doesn't service. Whereas postpaid customers can roam onto regional carriers like U.S Cellular and Thumb Cellular. Finally, their monthly bill is slighter higher than a postpaid account for the same plan, features, etc.

Yea, but, if they have a cellphone, they are probably going to have one no matter what. So, they have to go with one of the carriers. Do any of the other carriers offer unlimited data to the prepaid crowd? If so, then I could see it being thrown in as an incentive to make Verizon seem more attractive, like you said. If that's the case, then the OP is right, what is up with that? If I weren't grandfathered in already I would probably have called and complained. Haha.
