Why couldn't I send a text message?

This problem started just all of a sudden. It had been texting fine until 9:00 tonight. I would type my msg. and then hit "Send," but the circle would go around and around for almost a minute, and then finally it would give an alert sound with the word, "Failed." During this time, I could RECEIVE messages just fine. Around midnight, I tried once more, and it worked (finally).

1- Does anyone know the reason it wouldn't send the text?
2- If the msg. I'm sending is important, isn't there a way I could use email to send the text to the recipient's phone?
