Why did Google Pay suddenly stop working? (Yes, there are a couple of $$ in the account....)

Would a magnetic car mount affect Google Pay? It seems it stopped working in the last 2 weeks and that's all that's different about my phone vs a standard Pixel 2 XL.

Is there a metal disc/plate in between your phone and case? (I'm assuming you have a case since I don't think a magnetic mount would attract the phone itself.)
If so that may be shielding the NFC chip.
