Why Do Certain Apps Require Data When I'm on Wifi Already?

Why do so many apps require data when I'm on wifi already? It doesn't make sense... For example, AT&T's Visual Voicemail requires data, and so does sending MMS via the stock Messaging app. I can't access either when I'm on Wifi. I have to turn off Wifi and turn on Data.

I use JuiceDefender, which automatically turns off my Data when my phone is off to save battery.

Very good question. I think it has to do with the fact that visual voicemail and MMS do not run over standard TCP/IP. By standard I mean non purely AT&T mobile data with their security, encryption, etc.

Maybe because through data they can verify your subscription status.
