Recently I began getting the message about using an incompatible charger appear intermittently on the screen of my Samsung Galaxy S5, **even though nothing is plugged into the charger/USB port **

I would trying doing a hard reboot or clearing the cache in safe mode. Maybe even take a can of compressed air and blasting that sucker.
