Why do I get still VM notifications when my phone has no cellular carrier?

I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3. I just finished my contract with them and switched carriers and got a new phone with the same number, with the new carrier. My old phone, the Note 3, is now blowing up with "New Voice Mail" notifications, which is baffling me because it shows as having "No Service".

How might I stop these notifications? Should I take out the Verizon SIM card? Thanks for any insight...

Did you connect the old phone to WiFi? And it can't hurt to take out the Verizon SIM
