Unfortunately Google Hangouts has stopped

Nexus 5 Lollipop 5.1 - I've disabled Hangouts ... why do I get this popup several times a day? I've cleared the storage cache.

Re: Unfortunately Google Hangouts has stopped

Perhaps clearing the Data in the Hangouts app will help. A Power Off and Restart afterwards may also help.

Re: Unfortunately Google Hangouts has stopped

Forgot to mention I did that also. This has started since i downloaded 5.1 (as well as on my wife's phone who also has this happening).
We use 8sms and have Hangouts completely disabled, cache and data cleared.
Why would I get notifications that hangouts stopped working when it is disabled?

Re: Unfortunately Google Hangouts has stopped

I too have been receiving this message on my Nexus 5 quite frequently since installing 5.1 a couple of days ago.
Perhaps there are some similarities we can identify?
I too have Hangouts disabled. I don't recall when or why I did this, but it must have been some time ago - I have no need for that app.
I'm using Textra for SMS
I seem to get the crash message most frequently when playing a round of Words with Friends - but this is not terribly compelling since that accounts for about 1/2 my screen time.

Not enough data points yet to draw conclusions, but interesting that we're both using non-stock SMS apps.

I am confronting this issue too. I never used Hangout and is disabled. I use Evolve SMS as my text message app. This is a very strange kind of bug since 5.1 upgrade.

Re: Unfortunately Google Hangouts has stopped

Regarding this issue, I apply a hard Factory Reset at my Nexus 5. Once the phone reboot I proceeded to disable some Google features including Hangout. Then I apply a full Cache Partition clean at the phone, once the phone reboot, and to my annoyance, the " Unfortunately, Hangouts has stop. " continue to appears at my Nexus 5 screen no matter what I am doing at the time. Check out the screenshots. So this issue is definitely a permanent bug of Lollipop 5.1 upgrade. I don't like it, kind of disturbing my old mind.uploadfromtaptalk1428866695020.jpguploadfromtaptalk1428866713543.jpguploadfromtaptalk1428866727954.jpg

I have also been getting this message since the upgrade to my HTC m7. It has coincided with an inability to complete an OTA backup. Backup gets to 98% and fails. Has anyone else had that happen also?

Same issue on my G4, Hangouts is disabled (I don't use it.). Must be a 5.1 bug.

Re: Unfortunately Google Hangouts has stopped

Because, unfortunately, it has stopped. And it's a bit unfortunate.

Re: Unfortunately Google Hangouts has stopped

My wife has a Nexus 4 with 5.1.1 and I have a nexus 6 with the same. Both of our devices had the same pop-up message of "unfortunately, hangouts has stopped.". I disabled hangouts on both.

Solution.... Re-enable hangouts both. I just made sure that I uninstalled any updates back to factory. Uncheck auto update, and basically leave the program alone. I can't fully delete it anyway....and now I don't get pop-up messages anymore.

Re: Unfortunately Google Hangouts has stopped

Add me to the club. When I enabled Hangouts the message stopped arriving, which I suppose it would. Is it possible that the 5.1 developer hard coded Hangouts to never be disabled?

Has anyone already submitted this is to the developer ":-)

Re: Unfortunately Google Hangouts has stopped

Go back into settings>application manager>disabled and re-enable the Hangouts app. Open Hangouts, then click the menu button, click your username, then choose settings. Scroll to the bottom and "Sign Out". The app should close automatically. Then go back into settings>application manager and clear data then Disable the Hangout app again.

Re: Unfortunately Google Hangouts has stopped

I have the same issue as everyone else, on the Motorola Moto G 3rd Gen (XT1550) running 5.1.1.
Tried what Calyt00n posted; let's see how it pans out.

I go into the App manager and there is no Hangouts in the list and I still get the error. What is going on?
:(

Thank you Clayt00n that has worked on my Z3 running 5.1

Go back into settings>application manager>disabled and re-enable the Hangouts app. Open Hangouts, then click the menu button, click your username, then choose settings. I dropped Hangouts and went with Google Messages. No problems there.
