Why do some apps munch automatically? I have a task killer app and the list of apps constantly grows. Most are ones I don't launch or which are not notification based. Is there a way to stop these apps from launching and taking up resources?

Examples would be:
BN Nook
Words with friends
Facebook
Others...

What you think of as "background" may be just cached.

some of those apps are services just like windows services which always run in the background.

Android will restart is again even if you kill it.

Apps like Facebook run in the background for alerts and if you allow it to track you so it can tell you when your friends are near.

Apps run in the background for many reasons. Such as words with friends. Its an online game. How would it ever know if someone wants to play or if its your turn if it never checked the status with its servers.

Unless its some bizarre app that is ??? or its bogging down your device, I wouldn't worry about it.

Main reason I removed FB from my tablet, once a day I check in my PC what my stupid friends have to say in FB and I shout some stupidity back to them.

Coming into this late, but have the same issue with 'force stopping' certain apps (not closing, but killing) and then they appear back in memory. They're not open but appear as active when looking at them in the apps list of Android Assistant. Frankly, I want to control which non-system apps reside in memory. My suspicion is those non-killable apps have background functions Google allows Android to keep running despite the wishes of the device owner. I my case I have no apps set to track my location. I have no apps that are considered OS services. We are told the reason for closing is not killing is so apps start more quickly when called upon. I don't buy that. With more memory and faster processors today apps open lightening fast without a stub of them hanging out in memory.

What other app might I keep open that allows Facebook and its Messenger to reappear in memory after being killed each time it reappears?

So, is there another legitimate reason some apps are permanently killed and others are not?
