Why do some texts come in audible and others silent?

I have a nexus 5 on t-mobile and am using chomp sms as my text app. I normally receive audible text alerts, but a few times a day seemingly at random a text will come and only vibrate. I don't believe this is a contact issue because I will receive several audible text alerts and then a silent alert from the same contact, and it can happen with any contact. Does anyone know what could cause this?

I have no answer, but am experiencing the same thing using Hangouts as my SMS app.
