Why does automatic screen brightness not always working?

I use auto screen brightness. I just set it and forget it. But I notice that sometimes it's brighter than it should be or dimmer than it should be. So, I pull down the notification shade, go into brightness and turn off then on auto brightness and the screen adjusts automatically to what it should be at that given moment. It's kinda like I have to slap it in the face sometimes.

This isn't new, I had to do this on the S7 Edge also. What gives?

Same here. I think sometime if you forced it brighter while still set to auto it remembers. Like while watching a video, which may happen accidentally.

Yeah. The screen auto brightness isn't near as good as it was on the Note 7.

I've had similar experiences.

The s8 is supposed to learn how you self adjust the brightness and act accordingly when auto is toggled on.

In reality and real world usage I'm not so sure.

So I prefer to toggle it off and adjust if I ever needs to in order to meet the conditions I'm in.
