Why does Chrome reload?

Every time I minimise and re-open Chrome on my Nexus 9, all of the tabs are forced to refresh. Compared to my Nexus 7 2013 this is really inefficient which leaves the tabs as they are when it minimises Chrome. This is really odd and annoying, especially, I imagine, for those with LTE versions whose data is consumed each time they open it. Is there any way to prevent it? I checked the option in Chrome to use data compression (something like that) and the option was off on both devices. My 7 is on KitKat but my 9 is on Lollipop.

Mine doesn't do that, maybe try to clear the chrome app cache?
