Why does Gboard not perform autocorrect when typing into the Google search bar?

Because auto-complete in the search bar takes precedence. I know, I hate it too, but that's the way Google wants it to be :( One of the reasons (that, not being able to sync on a Samsung phone with Secure Folder installed, and lack of emoji auto-complete) I actually keep coming back to SwiftKey.

I agree, Spook!
I've been a SwiftKey user for years.

Me too but it seems that after the MS acquisition typing on it is VERY inaccurate! Sure, auto-correct usually makes up for it but man, does it seem to get the wrong letters A LOT!

But why can't autocorrect on the keyboard coexist with the search autocomplete?

Well I mean.. "Can it" ? -- Sure. If they program it to do so it definitely can.. but it seems Google prefers the other way. Maybe they think their search engine predictions are better fro search versus keyboard?

Even after the acquisition, SwiftKey has maintained their autonomy. I've not noticed any degradation in function in my use. My assessment was that they have only continued to get better. And after saying all of that, I still manage to fat finger the on-screen keyboard at times! :)

I actually like not having autocomplete on the search bar. It saves me from the hassle of forcing it to accept something that isn't in my dictionary like if I'm spelling a name or brand that isn't grammatically correct. If I misspelled something then the results themselves autocorrect.
