Bluetooth looses connection when 2feet away from Galaxy S4

I recently purchased a new Galaxy S4 for my son and then this week he received a bluetooth headset to listen to music. The phone finds and connects with no issues but when he is 1-2 feet away from the phone the signal is lost. The wireless headset works fine with both my Droid Maxx and my husband's iPhone so it has to be the Galaxy that is the issue. Any way to fix this range issue?

Welcome to Android Central! See what happens if you turn off the wi-fi on the phone. Sometimes, wi-fi can interfere with Bluetooth, since they're both on the same spectrum (2.4 GHz, assuming you're not using 5 GHz wi-fi). It really shouldn't interfere, but I've seen instances where it does.
