Why does my call go into basically a sleep mode

So I'm talking on the phone with someone and then all of a sudden they can't hear me , but I can hear them. I have to take my phone from my ear and look at it to touch the green icon which shows a phone handle to activate the call and be able to speak to the person I was having a conversation with. Why is this happening and is there something I can do to fix this.

Start by clearing the cache and rebooting. If it comes back, post type of phone, carrier, and make sure you have Bluetooth off.

Have someone look at the phone when you have it to your ear (and are on a call) to make sure that the screen goes black. If it stays lit, you could be "ear-muting", hitting the mute button with your ear. That would indicate a bad proximity detector or one being blocked by a case. (It's light-activated, so some cases, not properly designed, mess it up.)
