Why does my email app show an email as unread when I read it on my desktop?

Hi guys,
My charge port on my old S3 stopped working and they sent me a new one and I am having email problems.
I did root the old one and was unable to switch back to stock recovery in order to get any updates so I was using Jelly Bean

My new phone came with Kit Kat 4.4.2 and I am not going to root this because of all the hassles that I had before.

My issue is that I read my work emails at work on the computer, mark them as read but that information is not being transferred to my phone.

It is SO FRUSTRATING to check my email on my phone and see I have 40 new emails, when I took care of 35 of them on my computer at work. For some reason my read computer emails are not being marked as read on my phone.

I have done a google search and this was a problem from about a year ago and I have seen no resolution.

I am reaching out the the android community to see if anyone has any suggestions.

I don't want to root and I don't really like K-9 I just want my dumb stock email app to say that I have read the dumb emails!!

Help!!

If you have the phone email account set as a POP3 account, what you do on another computer won't show on the phone. Delete the account on the phone and set it up as an IMAP account. (If it still doesn't follow what you did on another computer, something is wrong with the email app.) IMAP is for multiple computers accessing the same account. POP3, an older protocol, wasn't designed for that (or folders).
