Why does my Galaxy S7 Always On display turn off after a brief time?

The Always On display worked well for the first few days. Yesterday I put a Lifeproof Fre case on the phone. Today the Always On display will be on for a brief time (about a minute), then it turns off. I went into Settings and it is correctly set up to be on. Anyone else with this problem? Any ideas on how to fix this without returning the device?

Under display have you got the "Keep screen turned off" option enabled?
