Why does my new s7 keep registering rapid touches to recent apps button? Bad phone?

This happened during initial setup seemingly randomly. Button triggers without touch, vibrate also triggers as if button being pressed with recent apps display showing up and disappearing multiple times before stopping. Occasional message regarding split screen not being available with recent apps list appears. Tried factory reset and issue began as soon as initial account set up completed even without any new apps being added. No issues when using VR apps but has happened while installing apps and updates. Happened with phone sitting in palm with no contact being made with screen. No problem noted when phone on stand bye/not logged in.
