Why does my nexus 7 power off after screen lock has activated?

After the timed sleep the screen comes back ok, but after sleep followed by screen lock the device powers off. The power button then needs to be pressed for about 15 secs before it powers up. I'm running the latest software version.

I've been having this problem as well. My 2012 model is damn near unusable. Looks like I'm getting a shield or N9.
