Why does my phone always overheat when using Google Maps?

I'm seriously contemplating upgrading my LG G3 to an iPhone 5S. The reason is, I use my phone a lot for navigation, and unfortunately it seems that Androids just aren't up to the task, although, it could just be this particular model. Ironically, my old iPhone 4 would never overheat, even when I used Google Maps for several hours. However, every time I use Google Maps for just a couple of minutes on the LG G3, my phone overheats and then shuts down. I took it to the Verizon Store, where they told me it was a software issue, and they told me that they fixed the problem, but right afterward, I tried using it to navigate again, and it still continued to overheat. What should I do?

I can say this isn't normal. My phones (including my iPhone 6+ when I had it) heat up when using navigation but not to the point of shutting down. That sounds like something may be wrong with the device. I would try and exchange if you can.

My Verizon LG G3 overheats frequently when using Google Maps for navigation. It goes into cool down mode, which makes it almost impossible to see the information on the display. Sometimes it gets so hot, it has to power down. It has been doing this since the update to Lollipop. It never happened with Kit Kat. Verizon sent me a replacement G3, and it is also overheating. So Verizon is sending me yet another replacement G3.

I would say try to get a replacement, I am sure it is the processor in the phone overworking itself and its not able to breathe so it overheats. Much similar to a computer, hopefully it is your specific phone and it was a lemon and a new one would fix the issue, or if not you could always try keeping cool air on the phone wherever you are navigating, I would assume a car so maybe keep it by the cool vents?

I've had overheating problems with both Google maps and Waze of I keep the screen on. If I keep the screen off unless I am actually looking at the map, I don't have any problems.

I've also noticed that my phone doesn't charge with a GPS app running and the screen on. It actually discharges slowly. The screen seems to suck a bunch of power.

This is unfortunate, but perhaps with the exception of playing a demanding 3D game using Maps may be the most stress you put on your phone. The Processor, GPU, Screen, GPS, and data radios all churning away at the same time.

However, something sounds really wrong with your unit. I use my VZW G3 all the time for navigation with Maps and Waze for extended hour+ long drives plugged in with the screen on and I've never had an overheating problem.

I'd do a full factory reset - start from scratch and try again. If it still happens VZW needs to give you a new unit.

Got a charger with a higher amp output to solve the problem of not charging with Maps or Waze running. (Need 2 amps or higher)
My phone does get warm, never shut down, but I have it on a vent mount and the AC keeps it cool.

my g3 likewise gets warm - drains and thanks for the tip on getting a higher amp adapter.

When the batter is low (10%?), maps and maybe waze offers to just show the screen when there is a turn - I haven't seen that as a setting - wish it were because the g3 just sucks so much power for the screen.

maybe not every smartphone would need this feature - but the g3 sure would benefit.

I have a LG G2 and I'm sick and tired of the same exact thing. Whenever I use Google Maps, it overheats and cools down - where the display dimmed. So I also cannot see the screen while driving and it will eventually shut down. I am also on 2 amp high power charge in car - which did not fix issue.

However, if I turn the display off, I agree it minimizes the overheating issue.

It's just extremely frustrating to deal with when I forget about the overheating issue and it shuts down in the middle of a place where I'm not familiar with.
