Why does my phone ignore a scheduled software update and then update whenever it feels like?

Android Central Question

I ALWAYS schedule my software updates for when I am asleep. Obviously, this is to make sure I can use my device when it is needed, ie while I am awake. Usually, I schedule the update at either 2am or 3am. Ever since getting the Samsung Galaxy 10e, software updates occur the next morning, about an hour after I get up and start using it. This means that 2 or 3am has passed, and my phone has completely ignored my scheduled software update. I wake up, see the notification that the software still needs to be updated, it even tells me that the update is now scheduled for 10:30am, a time I would not choose, as I have an ALARM at 10:30am. 10:30am comes and goes, no update is performed. The update decides to ONLY start once I am actively using the phone for about an hour. I have searched for an answer to this problem, have seen a LOT of similar questions asked, but no answer given is ever pertinent. I do not have battery saver on, the phone remains powered on all night, I have even stayed awake until the scheduled update time and just stared at my powered on phone, waiting for it to update, and it does not. What gives? Why give me an option to schedule the software update if the phone is determined to ignore me?

That's not what happens, though. It never auto installs when it's available. It installs like 24 hours AFTER it is available, and about 8 hours after my scheduling.
I understand that, but it might interfere, would it hurt to give it a try? Its not easy to test because you have to wait until next update comes

I get a notification that says an update is available. I tap the notification. It gives me two options, Install now, and Schedule install.

When it asks when you want it scheduled, does it give you the option of waiting a certain number of days? Maybe it's only giving you a time option for the rest of the day, and things reset after midnight.

I'm going to have to, HAHA!

No.

Why would it give me an option for 2am, if it reset after midnight? No, this makes absolutely 0 sense.
Yes , We will have to wait and see .
And please show little more respect, B. Diddy did mention he doesn't know Samsung devices and ask a fair question while trying help you .

I agree that it would make no sense -- but that's not to say the engineers always take this into account when they design something (or they may just have made an oversight). If this were in fact the case, then it's a reason to send them feedback.

Honestly, this has been a huge bother with me too. I haven't gone into setting to try to change anything, figuring that it should work properly. The fact is, that this isn't the first phone that has done this. (currently using a galaxy S21) I get a pop up and it asks if I want to install or schedule the install, then I set it to install in the middle of the night while I'm sleeping and it's on the wireless charger. It never updates. Never. It shows me the same message the next day, and I try it again, but it never, never updates at the time it's set at.

Now, I don't know how to show a screenshot of when it isn't updating. The screen that asks if I would like to update, is the same I assume for everyone, you click "schedule update" and then pick a time and set it.. nothing really to show. It just doesn't work. Perhaps there is a setting in updates, but really it should just work.

Welcome to Android Central! I asked this earlier in the thread, but just in case you didn't see it -- do you have the scheduled auto-restart option turned on? If so, I wonder if that could interfere with a scheduled update.

This has been happening to me for a couple years now, as well - exactly as described. It seems to be an issue for many users. It drives me up wall. It does not make any sense, if you keep rescheduling it only for it to fail in its task and not adhered to the time, then eventually the phone will just take it upon itself to update at a moments notice. Im in the middle of an important moment, then suddenly the update that i've actually scheduled 100 times suddenly decides to update, in the middle of the day... regardless of the data showing thats an inconvienent time

I have it set up to auto, i have strong wifi, the device is plugged in etc.. it just seems a broken functionality.

I too have this issue on my S20, had it on my S9 before this.
Isn't there a gripe line for Android or is Alphabet a complete black hole with no customer support?

Welcome to Android Central! Your complaint should be directed to the manufacturer, not to Google. Let Samsung know about this.

I just wanted to chime in that I have this problem too. I scheduled an update either yesterday or day before yesterday for 2 AM the following day and I just had the update randomly start while it was in my pocket at 1:47 PM. It's done this basically every time it has updated and now that I think about it, I don't recall it ever updating when I told it to.

My device is also a samsung, an S21 Ultra. I used to have a Note 8 that did not do this, if I'm remembering correctly. It does seem to be a samsung problem from the other commenters.

Same issue. And I don't appreciate all the people gasligtjing you saying it's in setting when clearly this is an issue with many Samsung phones and the feature just sucks and doesn't work

I am another commenter and this is a Samsung problem. For sure
