Why does my phone ring when im on a call?

This may be a stupid question, but how do I get my phone to stop ringing when I am on a call? If I am talking to someone and a text message or an email come in, it rings to alert me and I can not carry on my conversation on the phone until it stops. Would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

Welcome to Android Central! Is it the actual ringtone you hear, or is it the default notification tone? Notification tones usually just fire once -- is it repeating itself over and over?
