Why does my Samsung note 4 shut off automatically?

Welcome to Android Central! After it shuts off on its own and you restart, is the battery the same or a lot lower?

Sometimes the screen freezes up too.

Do you see any consistent patterns in when it shuts down or freezes up?

This could include things like - does it always die at approximately the same battery percentage, and if so does it come back up (as B. Diddy mentioned) at a much lower or higher percentage than it shut down at? Does it tend to die when you are running certain applications, and if so are these applications particularly hard on the battery (do they tend to use the camera a lot, or send/receive a lot of data, or games with heavy graphics)?

One of the most common reasons for a phone shutting down suddenly is a failing battery. They are wear parts and do die over the course of a few years more or less - generally depending on how heavily it is used and overall usage patterns.

First think I'd try is a replacement battery if you don't want to spend a lot of time on diagnosis. There are a lot of fake OEM batteries out there so it's kinda hard to be sure you are getting a great one, but Anker sells a known good one, and there are plenty of alternatives from reliable vendors.

I'm afraid this sounds like my problem. It happened to me when I was on holiday and was unable to hook my phone up and properly diagnose. However, over the course of a week my Note 4 went from being a little twitchy to complete and total unusable brick. The only thing that kept it going for most the week was an app called "Wake lock- powermanager" that prevents the device going to sleep. If you read the reviews on that app page you will see that we are not alone. In fact there is currently a class action lawsuit in Canada against Samsung because it is claimed they have used dodgy eMMC storage chip for the on board drive which is causing all of the issues.

The only thing that apparently will fix the problem is replacing the motherboard. Or buying a new phone. Which I did.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.

I have experienced similar problems with my Note 4 freezing and shutting down then failing to turn on again. Touch Wiz seems to be the problem so I downloaded a third party launcher. I also downloaded Wake lock manager App. This solution worked and my Note 4 works like a charm. Some forums say the stock Marshmallow ROM has bugs which cause power magement issues.
