Why does my screen light up when I get a text message?

Default messaging app lights screen

Just bought a G2 (new) from an ebay seller. I'm very impressed with this phone so far. However, one thing is really bugging me: every time I get a text the screen lights up, which is an unnecessary waste of battery since the LED can do the job. I've searched and found complaints from a while back about the opposite (people wanted it to light the screen but it didn't), so I'm mystified why mine is doing this. Can anybody tell me how to fix it, short of disabling all notifications in the messaging app? The options for the popup and message preview don't seem to have any effect.

Thanks!

You'd have to use a third party app to do that. From a bit of Google searching for it, the stock app doesn't have that option.

I'd be ok with that, except it seems that for most people the stock LG messaging app does NOT light the screen, even if they want it to. For me it's the opposite, so there must be a setting somewhere that affects it. Either that, or there's a weird bug in the app, which I suppose is possible.

Weird. Have you checked all the settings in the messaging app?

Yep, checked them all. Everybody else seemed to say that the screen stopped lighting up when they updated to Kitkat; I'm running Kitkat and can't make it stop!

That's really weird. Well, I'm not sure what else to suggest since I don't have a G2/G3 myself.
I'll see if I can ask some of the G2/G3 guys :)

Under Settings in the messaging app I have a New Message Pop-up option - if I untick this it stops the screen lighting up when a message appears (I'm running stock KK and stock messaging app).

You have a Samsung? My Z3 doesn't have a setting option like that.
