Why does my voice recognition sometimes go totally haywire?

When placing a call, using my voice to indicate whom to call, I have recently had extreme problems.

For example, ask it to call "Jose Navarro" and it will propose "Doug Smith" as the name being requested. Obviously two names that sound nothing alike.

Or I will try to call "Christopher Baker" and it will give me choices nothing like that name, when Christopher is in my contacts. If I instead ask for Christopher, it will propose another Christopher without offering Christopher Baker as a choice (and yes, he is in my contacts as Christopher, not Chris). And if I ask to call "Baker" (no first name), it will propose two other contacts whose last names are "Bostwick" and "Rogers."

This problem just started last week, January 2.

How do I fix it? Is there a means of calibrating the system to my voice and diction?

Does it give you the same issue if you do Voice commands on the device itself? If it does, the problem might the be car's microphone... It might have moved, something might be obstructing it, or another vibrating component (i.e. speakers) might be causing interference.

You can always check your Google Activity history to see what the Assistant HEARD and see if it's an issue with that or if it's just not processing the command right (i.e. if the transcription of the command is correct, but the final action on it isn't).

Apologies... how do I check that activity?

I solved the problem with a quick talk with the dealer.

I turned the phone off, then on again, unpaired it, then re-paired it.

Not sure if the turning the phone off was required, but something in there got me fixed.
