Android Central Question

When I am on a call with someone my speaker volume lowers if me and the other person speak at the same time resulting in me not hearing anything they say.

I can't even laugh at the same time without it lowering while on speaker.

I'd like some way to disable this because it's quite annoying. I can't even move something without it lowering the volume.

Example: Me and my GF are talking and I'm filling a cup up with water while she's saying something. I can't hear her at all because my speaker volume lowers anytime I make noise.

I'd very much appreciate any feedback. Thank you. :)

It's a Huawei p20. The volume slider does not move at all. It's just if I make a tiny bit of noise on my end the speaker volume reduces. I have to stay quiet if I want to hear someone otherwise the call volume lowers until I am quiet or not making any noise.

The volume will go back to normal once I am not making any noise or if I stop talking.
Hi, welcome to AC!

Can try reseting your phone app by long press the icon and tap info >then scroll to storage and clear data, cache, and force stop it and test again

Your voice goes down because there is another input so you are sharing a set level of volume. Once the other party stops talking your voice returns to full volume

Yeah but I don't know how I can fix this. It's just extremely annoying that I have to say "What" or "Hm?" all the time. It only does this on speaker phone. I guess it's some type of Echo cancelling feature?

I want my Speaker Volume to stay the same and not be reduced whenever I say anything.

Is this only on speakerphone, or also when using the earpiece speaker?

It's mainly when it's on speakerphone. It will do it when it's not on speakerphone sometimes too but mostly whenever I enable the speakerphone. This sounds like some option enabled to reduce the volume when I speak that way I can hear myself speak.

I can't say for sure, but I think this normal behavior for speakerphone calls. The audio of the call probably needs to be reduced while you're talking in order to prevent it from being picked up by the phone's mic along with your voice.

Hum, I also failed to mention that it's mainly whenever using WhatsApp, it can be quite frustrating that I'm not allowed to do much if I want to be able to hear something someone says. I've checked with the app but no reports have been seen with the app like this.

That would be defying the laws of physics so best of luck with that

That hasn't done anything. I think it's just some built in echo reduction feature with the phone being that all Huawei phones have them.
Yup. Without NC on speakerphone, feedback would be a pia.
Go to Settings, Sound Quality and Effects. Tweak the eq settings for more clarity on the calls.
Good luck

I've always found speakerphone calls suboptimal regardless of the phone (doesn't matter if it's a cellphone or conventional landline). Can you just use a Bluetooth headset if you don't want to carry your phone around?
