Why does owner info vanish from lockscreen?

I set an owner info msg and checked the box to display it on the lockscreen. At first it worked, but now it vanishes too quickly to even read, as the pattern grid appears. What's wrong? (Droid Turbo)

I really don't think this was an especially stupid question... any help, please?

OK, let me answer my own question: it appears that

If you bring up the lockscreen by tapping the power button, the owner information is visible.
If you get to the lockscreen by swiping the notification screen, it's not.

Makes no sense to me, but there it is.
