Why does Runkeeper GPS not accurately track distance when my screen is locked?

I'm using a google Pixel 3A. (previously used a Huawei P9, didn't have this issue).

I've used Runkeeper for years; got a pixel 3A in July, and the runkeeper app doesn't update distance when running while the screen is locked. If I unlock the screen, then distance seems to work correctly.

I'm assuming it's something to do with runkeeper access to GPS (or GPS itself) not being allowed when screen is locked. I run long distances, so don't want to leave screen on for hours, and am convinced there's a setting I'm missing somewhere, but can't find it.

Any help much appreciated!
