Why does sound continue to play out of the speakers when my headphones are plugged in?

I'm on the galaxy j7 and using some relatively expensive headphones, and when I plug my headphones in sound plays through them. However, sound also plays through the speakers on my phone but much quieter than if the headphones were not in. I'm thinking it could be damage to the headphones itself or to the headphone jack but I'm not sure.

Do you have a case on your phone? If so, make certain that it is not interfering with fully inserting your headphone jack.

Take the case off and test.
