Why does the email folders show the wrong number of emails?

In the folders for my email account both the inbox and trash folders show there are emails but when I try to view them the folders are empty?

Welcome to the forums. What device and email app are you using? Have you already tried clearing cache for the email app? Do you get the same error when accessing that email account from a different device/app?
