Why does the "Sprint" network identifier disappear?

even when I am in full 3G service, there is a blank space in the notification bar where "Sprint" should be.

I've had my epic since the early part of october and don't remember ever seeing sprint on my notification bar. From right to left I always have the time, battery indicator bar, phone signal strength, network connection status (3g, 4g or wifi) but never has sprint been there. My phone is 100% stock.

Pull the notification bar down. You should see "Sprint" on the left just below the buttons on the top....

There are two possibilities AFAIK.

1. You're not really connecting 3G. The icon always says 3G even if you're on 1X unless you have a ROM/Theme that specifically displays the actual type of connection.

2. You're on 3G but connected to a partner tower. It's not a roaming tower as in Verizon giving you a little triangle, but rather a tower belonging to a company that Sprint has agreements with to behave as though you're still on Sprint's 3G network.

Mine always disappeared when I entered Airplane mode or a no signal area, and didn't come back until a reboot.
