Why doesn't Google just name it the "Google Phone" ???

That's what people are going to call it anyway... who's going to say Pixel all day long? or "peek sew" phone?

Google uses the Pixel name for it's high end (and priced) devices.

1. Chromebook Pixel
2. Google Pixel C
3. Google Pixel Phone(s)

I don't really care what they call it as long as it's in my hand..

In the names of things, we have the following:

Samsung Galaxy S 7 Edge
Samsung Galaxy S 7
Samsung Galaxy Note 7
LG G 5
LG V 20
Moto Z Droid
Moto Z Play
Apple iPhone 7

So those are all Company, Lineup, Model - as long as you treat Samsung Galaxy as the company and S or Note being the model. But the Samsung Galaxy S did not receive a number because it was the first.

HTC does it differently this year with the HTC 10, so no line number, just the model name

Google Pixel seems to be following the the group with the Google Pixel (Company, Line), where the first in the line doesn't need a model number because it's the only one. The next year would be expected to be the Google Pixel 2 (and Google Pixel 2 XL), etc. This is as long as we are to believe that Pixel is the line of products, rather than this year's model.

It makes sense to call it Google Pixel from a marketing standpoint. That way, if for some reason the product acquires a negative image, they can rebrand the lineup to start over, and avoid word association with the old device

true... Samsug can just call the Note line something else... instead of Note 8.. the one the comes after the burning hot Note 7.

To be fair, the phone doesn't have an official name yet. All we've got is solid leaks and clues but Google hasn't announced the official name yet.
