Why doesn't my Galaxy S6 (SM-G920F) detect software updates?

My phone has been stuck for quite a while on 5.0.2 and I want to upgrade to the latest firmware. For some reason when I press check for updates the phone does not update. I've tried Smart Switch and that doesn't update it either. I want to figure out an official way to do this because I don't want to risk tripping the KNOX counter.

If you bought the phone carrier-branded, the updates come from the carrier. Otherwise they come from Samsung. In either case, there may not be a 5.1 release for your particular F model yet.

How does samsung push updates? I've tried Kies and SmartSwitch. I don't know of any other ways to get updates directly from Samsung. If I wanted to use odin the firmware is already out. But I'd rather figure out a way to get OTA updates
