Why doesn't OK Google recognize mom or dad when voice dialing?

Why "OK Google" doesn't recognize "mom" or "dad" when voice dialing

When my husband tried to voice dial "mom" using "OK Google" the automatic voice response was "Who's mom?" "Mom" is in the contacts list. He gets the same response when he tries to voice dial "dad". I have the opposite problem. When voice dial "mom" or "dad" using "OK Google" the call goes through but I don't get an audible response. We got our phones at the same time and we both have Samsung Galaxy S6. Can anyone please help?

Download cortana for android it might work better

I've had a ton of voice recognition issues with Google for voice dialing. It's to the point I don't even use it anymore (but I've had devices with their own voice recognition software).
