Why don't I get a text notification when looking at the text thread on Samsung Galaxy S4?

No text notification when looking at the text thread on Samsung Galaxy S4

If I leave my phone screen on a continuing text thread, I do not get a notification when a new text arrives. If I exit out of the thread I will receive the notification.

Notifications only occur if you're not looking at the thread. That's how it works. (There's no setting to change it in the stock app - some SMS apps may allow it.)
