Why dont I get new message pings when message app is open?

I have a samsung galaxy s8 with android 9. Sometimes I don't hear the notification when I get a message. I've already checked my notif settings. It just doesn't work sometimes. My only hypothesis is that it doesn't play the sound when the messages app is already open, even after the screen dims. I'm missing texts because I can't hear replies. Is there any way to make the notif sound play 100% all the time regardless of the status of my phone? (excluding DND)

Welcome to Android Central! This is normal behavior for most messaging apps -- the idea is that if you have the app open to that thread, there's no need to be alerted that you have a new message. There are other 3rd party messaging apps like Textra that give you the option to have notifications even when the app is open to the thread.

You get a brief pop up and status bar icon you have new messages when your in a existing message
