Why don't I get text notifications while I am texting?

Text notifacation while texting

I am wondering why I don't get notified while I'm texting (when a new text comes in). Basically I can be texting with somebody turn my head maybe look at the TV but don't realize that a new text came in because it doesn't sound. It is only a problem while I'm in a conversation with that person is there anyway to fix this? I have a Samsung note 4.

I am honestly not sure if there is a fix. I tend to not get notifications of Hangouts when I am in the proper conversation, either.

which app are you texting with?

Just the basic t txt app (not text + or hangouts)
