Why gmail app is consuming all my data?

I'm using android 5 and gmail is consuming both wifi and 3G data in the background (various 15GB with wifi) and i have no idea why.
How can i stop this behaviour?

Can you post a screen shot of the data usage? You could also have a setting enabled to automatically download attachments, which would also explain high data usage if you are receiving large attachments.
